The Auto and Transport Workers' Union AKT previously issued a strike warning in response to wage increases and qualitative issues in the labor dispute. The strike, beginning tomorrow on February 15, affects four different contractual sectors and involves approximately 9,000 workers in the truck transport, tank truck and oil product, stevedoring, and terminal operations sectors. Due to the strike's extensive scope, its impact on international shipments is inevitable.
What areas are affected by the strike?
The industrial action extensively affects all shipments both domestically and internationally. The impact is particularly severe on foreign trade. One reason for this is the overtime ban in the stevedoring sector that came into effect on February 1, which, when prolonged, will burden import and export shipments moving through maritime connections.
Delivery schedules for international shipments cannot be guaranteed during the potential strike, and this should be noted on the websites or online stores of companies offering international shipping.
How the strike affects our supported shipping companies
DB Schenker: The strike significantly affects DB Schenker's transport operations. This considerably slows down both imports and exports as well as domestic deliveries. DB Schenker reports that they will try to maintain their operations as much as possible during the industrial action. DB Schenker will prioritize socially important products such as medicines and food supplies.
GLS: The strike may affect export pickups and domestic deliveries handled by GLS's subcontractors Posti and DB Schenker. The strike should not affect GLS's outbound shipments.
Matkahuolto: The strike has minimal impact on shipments through Matkahuolto.
Posti: The strike significantly affects Posti''s operations. It impacts Posti''s transport and terminal operations as well as domestic and international shipments. Posti estimates that due to the strike and support measures, the delivery of packages, letters, magazines, and international incoming and outgoing shipments will be delayed from several days to over a week. The same estimate applies to freight transport.
Postnord: The strike's impact on Postnord shipments is very minimal. However, due to the stevedores' strike, there may be delays in international transport, especially regarding German traffic. If ports close completely, this will naturally affect all import and export operations.
UPS: The strike has a very minimal impact on UPS shipments. We have confirmed in advance that the strike has the least impact on international shipments through UPS Express saver service. Shipit offers fast and reliable shipping through UPS, so make sure this option is available in your shipping choices.
