Automatic parcels for Bundle orders

Does your online store have product bundles made up of several separate products? Shipit Delivery Checkout's Bundle support automatically recognizes these and creates its own package for each product included in the bundle, each with the correct dimensions and weight, based directly on Shopify's product data (metafields).

This feature is suited for online stores that want to offer product bundles without packaging and shipping pricing being based on guesswork.

1. Create the required metafields in Shopify

Go to Shopify: Settings → Metafields and metaobjects → Products → Add definition.

Create four new metafields:

  • Depth

  • Height

  • Width

  • Weight

Select Decimal as the type for each one, so that decimal values (e.g. weights like 13.6 kg) are also possible.

Shopify automatically generates namespace/key pairs for these (e.g. custom.depth, custom.height, custom.width, custom.weight).

2. Fill in the product dimensions

Go to each product in Shopify that belongs to the bundle.

On the product page, scroll down to the "Product metafields" section and enter that product's actual dimensions in centimeters (Depth, Height, Width) and weight in kilograms (Weight).

Save the product. Repeat this separately for each product included in the bundle.

3. Connect to Shipit Delivery Checkout

Open the Shipit Delivery Checkout app in Shopify, and go to Settings → Automation.

Find the "Parcel Weight Settings" section, and make sure the "Suggest parcel dimensions and weights" checkbox is checked.

Click the blue link below it, "Advanced: Shopify bundle metafields" this opens eight fields for bundle metafields.

Enter the word custom (namespace) in each field, along with the corresponding key, written in lowercase:

  • Length metafield namespace: custom — Length metafield key: depth

  • Width metafield namespace: custom — Width metafield key: width

  • Height metafield namespace: custom — Height metafield key: height

  • Weight metafield namespace: custom — Weight metafield key: weight

All eight fields must be filled in before bundle parcels are automatically imported. Save the settings.

4. Create a bundle product with the Shopify Bundles app

Install the free Shopify Bundles app (apps.shopify.com/shopify-bundles), if it isn't already in use.

Create a bundle product as follows:

  1. Open the Bundles app in Shopify and click "Create bundle"

  2. Give the bundle a name (e.g. "Winter Gear Set")

  3. Click "Add products" and select the component products for which you filled in the metafields in step 2. A bundle can contain up to 30 different products

  4. Set the quantity for each product (e.g. 1 pc per product), unless the bundle includes more than one of the same product

  5. Click "Save and continue"

Shopify must specifically recognize the products as components of the bundle, so that Shipit's automation can process them correctly. This recognition only happens when the products have been combined into a bundle product created through the Bundles app itself.

5. Order processing and parcel booking

When a customer buys a bundle product from your store, Shopify automatically recognizes the order as a bundle order. The order shows one line with the bundle's name, and beneath it, the component products included in the bundle are listed separately.

Open the order in Shopify and start processing it as usual. The system automatically recognizes the bundle and displays one pre-filled parcel for each product included in the bundle, each with its own dimensions and weight, pulled directly from the products' metafields. You can still edit the dimensions, weight, or number of parcels before booking.

When you process the order, a separate shipping label is created for each parcel, for example, a bundle of three products produces three separate shipping labels for the same order.

Summary

Bundle support works correctly when the following things are in place:

  • Metafields created: Four metafields (Depth, Height, Width, Weight) have been created in Shopify, and their actual values have been filled in for each component product in the bundle

  • Shipit connected: The metafields' namespace and key information has been entered into Shipit Delivery Checkout's "Advanced: Shopify bundle metafields" section, and the "Suggest parcel dimensions and weights" setting is turned on

  • Bundle published: The bundle product has been created with the Shopify Bundles app, its status is "Active", and it has been published to the Online Store channel

Once all of this is in place: Shipit automatically recognizes bundle orders and creates a separate, pre-filled parcel for each component of the bundle, with the correct dimensions and weight, with no manual work required.

Yes, bundle automation does not require the CCS feature and works on all Shopify plans, including the Basic plan.

No, Shopify Bundles is Shopify's own free app.

The most common reason is that one of the four metafields is missing for one of the bundle's products, or the bundle product is still in Draft status and hasn't been published to the Online Store channel.
